Main Camp

The earliest records we have with respect to ownership of Camp speak of a 1924 conveyance from Helen Bangs to Henry and Mary Blagden.  The Blagdens, in turn, conveyed The Point and nearby property to William A. Rockefeller in 1927.  It seems that the Camp was created by a Mr. Sam Bodine who acquired the property on July 18, 1965.  Mr. Bodine conveyed the Camp to William and Gail Bradbury who sold the Camp to Lance and Peg.  Lance and Peg subsequently conveyed Camp to the Camp Beside the Point Family Trust with the hope that many generations of taller than average Balks would be able to enjoy the property.

At least by 1987 there existed a series of deeds and a license agreement that permitted the The Point to operate as an Inn subject to a number of restrictions.  Absent the license agreement, the property constituting The Point could only be a residence.  The license agreement was amended and restated on December 20, 1999 to its current form and contains certain restrictions to benefit the surrounding properties (Licensors) so long as The Point is operated as "a first class Inn" including:

  • No boathouse or other building on Bottle Bay;
  • No new building without consultation with the Licensors;
  • No road signs without consent of 51% of the Licensors;
  • Annual meetings can be requested by 51% of the Licensors to be held on the 2nd Saturday in July;
  • No public dances or dining; and
  • No more than 30 guests except for special occasions.

Accordingly, we request all guests at Camp to remain vigilant and alert for any signs of public dancing.
